5 easy steps to transform your deck for summer

If your deck is looking a little worse for wear, the change of seasons is as good a time as any to give it a simple but effective makeover.

1. Treat wood

If you have a hardwood deck, make the most of the warmth and richness of the natural timbers. Hardwood decks ooze style and, with care and some maintenance, they can last for years and be the scene of many happy summer gatherings. Apply a timber finish or oil to your deck every year to keep the wood looking its natural best.

2. Try pine

If you are on a tighter budget and are relaying a new deck surface, treated pine is great option. It’s light and versatile and you can stain or paint it to create the look you want. Paint the decking a classic and timeless white, opt for a limewashed finish for coastal chic or stick with a traditional rich woody tone.

3. ... Or go grey

To bring a deck bang up to the minute, go for shades of grey. After all, grey is the new black. Decorate your outdoor area – including surrounding walls or even your decking – with a spectrum of greys from the darkest charcoal greys to the naturally weathered greys found in homes along the coast.

4. Weather proof

Don’t forget to freshen up any walls surrounding your outdoor deck area, too. Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen gives a long-lasting finish and can withstand the harsh Australian summer. It’s self-priming and comes in a range of colours to give your outdoor area a new look – choose from classic white or shades of relaxing blue or green. Or to warm things up, choose splashes of vibrant red, yellow or orange.

5. Style it

Finish off your revamped deck with some all-important practical and stylistic details, such as a built-in bench with some colourful cushions. If you have space, add a set of wide steps to the deck. Clad them in the same material as the deck and paint them the same colour so they flow seamlessly into the backyard. They’ll make your deck look bigger and are another seating option when you host a crowd.

Finally, add some LED lights set into the side of your deck – they’re not only practical but they create atmosphere when the sun goes down, too.

Now, happy entertaining… and bring on summer!
